Why Wick Trimming is Important

Black 7" wick trimmer

Wick trimming is an essential part of candle care, especially when you want to get the most out of your favorite fragrances.

While these specially shaped scissors may look a little funny, they’re designed to trim the wick in any container. They can even trim the wick in tall, skinny containers, which can’t be reached by normal scissors. Made with stainless steel, the trimmer has a thick base that will ensure you don’t trim it too short, and the circular catch dish on the top will keep the trimmed pieces out of your candle so they can be easily discarded.

Trimming your candle wicks will give you a clean burn every time. If you cut it down to 1/4-1/8 of an inch, you’ll prevent your wick from blooming and smoking. Not only does this improve the life of your candle, it keeps the container clean (less smoke means a cleaner jar), prevents mushrooming from a build-up of carbon, and ensures you burn your candles safely. Longer wicks burn higher and hotter and can become fire hazards.

We recommend you trim your wick before every use.

To use your wick trimmer, place it inside the jar and trim to a height of 1/4-1/8 of an inch. Make sure you cut the wick and lift the trimmer straight up, so you don’t spill the trimmed debris into the jar. Discard the wick in the trash before lighting your candle.

Top tips

  • Trim your wick before lighting your candle, when the wax is room temperature
  • Don’t cut the wick of a burning candle
  • Don’t cut the wick too short, otherwise it will not create a full melt pool
